A Maze'N things

Phillip Island Victoria

What is your favourite theme park ride/attraction?

My favourite ride/attraction is "Villa Volta" at De'Efteling in Holland. The illusions and sensations generated fit perfectly with the type of things we like to do at A Maze'N Things.  We have a ride called the Conjurors Express which was inspired by Villa Volta, but is not quite as grand.

Who inspires you and why?

I am inspired by people who give their time and effort to others without complaining or expecting a reward.  They do what they do just because that is in their make up.  An individual who inspires is a Phillip island local, Beau Vernon and his wife Lucy.  He would be a good motivational speaker for the next AALARA conference.

How did you get into this industry?

I was working in the recreation centre industry in local government and had a falling out with the Town Clerk.  I then decided l wanted my own business.  We went on holiday to New Zealand and was inspired by Puzzling World which we then replicated near Geelong and Phillip Island.  A Maze'N things at Phillip Island has now grown to a really significant business.

Your biggest challenge yet?

We did a $3 m extension in 2016 called Magic Manor which is of world standard and better than anything we have done before.  As an owner busilder, it was a huge challenge that l am still recovering from.  magic Manor is fantastic and we have won the Victorian Tourism Awards.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, name 3 people you’d like to share it with?

Nelson Mandela, Weary Dunlop and Rebecca Gibney.

Name one thing you can’t live without?

My mum

What is your favourite meal of the day and why?

My favourite meal would be dinner with friends, that is prepared by someone else. I love Asian food, especially Thai and Indonesian, and having friends around means you can share the meal, time and laughter.

Best advice you have been given?

Three bits of advice.

  1. A man earning $30,000 p.a dreams of earning $100,00 p.a.. Why does he never dream about earning $1,000,000 p.a? (I was earning $30k at the time)
  2. The people business (which is what tourism and recreation is) is easy.  Just NEVER forget, "Cleanliness, friendliness and service"
  3. Location. location. location.
